Good blog post about Watson's success.
The New York Times seems to have hallucinated that Watson answered this question with "What is Elegance?", demonstrating that it could "parse language"
HEDGEHOG-PODGE for $2000 : “A recent bestseller by Muriel Barbery is called this ‘of the hedgehog’” [site:en.wikipedia.org bestseller Muriel Barbery "of the Hedgehog"] 1st result: THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG (right answer)
I'm pretty sure that Watson answered with the full title, and was awarded a correct answer.
Similarly, when it answered 'What is Mickey' and the answer should have been (I believe) 'What is Mickey Mouse' or "Who is...", it also got a correct answer. This might fly in Jeopardy, but I'm not sure it would count at TREC.
